Abacus home
Our self-contained, designated, safe and secure baby and toddler unit is situated on its own floor within our nursery. It cares for babies from three months of age, up to and including two year olds. Children move into the toddler/pre-school group in the September after their second birthday with special, supported visits over the summer months in preparation for this exciting transition. All children in the baby and toddler unit enjoy challenging activities for their age and stage of development. These are planned in line with the seven areas of learning of the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), but concentrating on the three prime areas for the youngest children. These are Communication and Language development; Personal, Social and Emotional development; and Physical development. Each child has their own key person to help ensure that every child’s care and learning is tailored to meet their individual needs, help the child become familiar with the setting, offer a settled relationship for the child and build a relationship with their parents. There is a higher ratio of staff to children in the baby and toddler unit (often exceeding the EYFS requirements) in order to provide high quality care. A large, bright, spacious carpeted playroom provides an inviting play space for both adult-led and child-initiated activities, with an extensive range of toys and resources that have been carefully selected to support the developmental needs for children present. A childrens bathroom with nappy changing facilities, child-sized toilet and hand basin, is easily accessible from this room. As there is no door between the two areas, our safeguarding policy is promoted in that staff are not lone working with children in these areas but the layout still allows privacy for children. A second playroom is used for messy play activities such as painting, water play and play-dough. It has washable flooring and doubles as a dining room for our sociable meal times. A separate cot room provides a cosy, quiet area for babies and toddlers to sleep, away from the sound of children playing. Classical music is played to soothe the babies asleep. Staff consistently check sleeping children every ten minutes and accurately record these checks. Staff working in the baby and toddler unit have specific training and skills in the care of babies. The benefit of the self-contained baby and toddler unit is that adults also have their own washroom facilities and a milk-kitchen on this floor in order to prepare bottles/feeds which means ratios are not compromised at any time.
