Abacus home

Our Toddler and Pre-school room team

All our staff have been specially selected for their relevant childcare qualifications, experience and most importantly, possessing a genuine love for children. They understand the importance of providing a safe, stimulating and fun-filled environment, in a home-from-home atmosphere.

Abacus Nursery values its staff highly. We feel that it is in the interest of the children placed in our care that every opportunity be given to every staff member to develop their knowledge and skills in childcare. All staff attend regular training, to update their skills in childcare practices and keep abreast of current legislation.

Our key person system gives each member of staff particular responsibilty for just a few children. During 'settling in sessions' the key person completes paperwork with parents to ensure we meet the needs of every child attending Abacus and can respond sensitively to their feelings, ideas and behaviour. With this information we can ensure we are providing the very best care, support and stimulation to help them develop and most importantly have fun.  The keyperson will then continue to observe, record, gain feedback from the rest of the staff team to ensure each child's needs are continually being met. Reports and parent chats allows keypersons to share information with each child's parents during their time with us.

Our experienced staff plan and delivers 'school sessions' in preparation for the children's transition to school each September. She is particularly skilled in teaching through play with a mixture of adult led and child initiated activities, which are an extension of what we do constantly in the Toddler and Pre-school room.

Hollie commenced with us in January 2016. She holds a Ba Hons in Early Years and has 7 years experience within the early years sector, including 2 of which were in the reception/school environment. Hollie also has a little boy of her own. She is a very kind, caring, calm member of the team. Hollie initially worked two days on each floor but has impressed us so much she is now the Toddler and Pre-school room supervisor. She is the 'champion'for Maths development.

Nursery Practitioner

Level 3

Bryony returned to us as a full member of staff in September 2014 following relief work and having previously working at Abacus before having had two young boys of her own. Bryony holds a Btec in Early Years (2000). She is the support supervisor for the Toddler and Pre-school room. Bryony is well organised and experienced in all aspects of nursery care. She is particularly strong at the paperwork side of nursery work and takes her role as key person very seriously. Key children greatly benefit from the key person role at Abacus and the fact that all staff including management know every child so well in the key persons absence. Bryony is a 'Champion' for Expressive Arts and Design. This means she will ensure we all promote this Area of Learning for the toddlers and pre-schoolers in all we do. She is an excellent role model for this as she develops children's language so well with open ended questions and statements to encourage them to think critically. She is also responsible for boys mark making. Bryony holds a First Aid certificate.

Sophie Joined us in June 2016. She is Level 3 qualified in early years and is a lovely, quiet member of the team. She is based downstairs. She is studying for her Foundation Degree in Early Years alongside her role at Abacus.

Ellie started with us in September 2016 but we were lucky enough to have her start her induction with us over the summer once she finished her school job. Ellie is based downstairs. She completed her nursery nurse level 3 training at Chiltern College as a residential student. She is fun and energetic in her work with the children.

Emma returned to us in September 2016 after a year gap to work school hours to settle her eldest son into school. Previous to that she had been our deputy and worked at Abacus for 10 years. We are delighted to have her back as a nursery practitioner working in the Toddler and Pre-school room. She is level 3 qualified with a wealth of experience.

Carla started with us in July 2016. She is a qualified Nursery and Primary teacher from Argentina. She is also trained in working with Special Educational Needs. Carla has been a nursery nurse in both Milan and London as well as Argentina. Her lovely accent is quite a treat to hear around Abacus and she can speak English Italian and Spanish. Carla moved downstairs in June 2017 to help our youngest children have a smooth transition to the Toddler and pre-school room.
