Our School Readiness sessions are run each day between January and August for the cohort of children starting school that September. Each child will participate in a minimum of two sessions per week (if they attend more than one day per week) with planned activities to promote all aspects of School Readiness. Children are taken to the Art Studio to feel special and have small group experiences in a wide range of activities. The focus is on turn taking, listening and independence skills. We also promote numeracy, literacy and phonics in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage. The exciting sessions are monitored and assessed by Hollie (supported by Sophie) and observations shared with the children's individual key person via Tapestry our online development journal, which you will then have access to within the month. The information gathered is used to complete the Transition forms into school. Children have a routine for their sessions, which begin with role playing into a 'school sweatshirt', answering to their name with the register and having fun with 'Polly the Parrot' who needs help with her phonics !! We have parents evenings each year to share with you about these sessions in more detail and to give out the charts we use to promote independence and school readiness at home and nursery which schools have adopted from us as they were so valuable. Alfred the Mouse is a toy mouse who helps children with the transition between nursery and school. Check him out on Somerset Schools websites.
