Our lovely staff team at Abacus Nursery

We are passionate about what we do at Abacus and believe in a strong leadership and management team to lead by example and inspire our staff. We have a fantastic staff team. Ruth and Sara work in excellent partnership to share the roles and responsibilities of management with both being hands on with the children to ensure we are in touch with reality and can offer support with any issue. Each floor has it's own supervisor who is responsible for the smooth running of their designated age group. These two members of staff are not only very experienced practitioners but also parents themselves. Their own children attend on the opposite floor to where they work which works beautifully. On their days off there is a support supervisor, chosen for their excellent skills to ensure consistency throughout the week. (see 'Under two's' and 'Over two's' for the staff profiles of those who work directly with the children). We have bi-weekly management meetings to ensure we are united in what we do and constantly improving our practice. Our teams on each floor work closely with each other to ensure there is no divide on the floors. We come together regularly for party teas, breaks etc which ensures high staff morale. We have monthly staff meetings which always include an element of staff training and development. After the whole team meeting for an hour, the teams split into their separate teams to discuss issues only relevant to each of them. This is excellent for sharing of information and continuity on how children are cared for to an exceptional standard. All of our staff team are at least Level 3 in Early Years, which is above requirements. Sara has her Early Years Degree. We work with 5 staff on each floor which is again above requirements. We aim for outstanding outcomes for children and believe in quality childcare. All our staff are encouraged to engage in continuous professional development to ensure we keep up to date.

All the team at Abacus

Every member of staff is Pediatric First Aid Qualified. We all complete our training each 3 years at different times of the year to ensure we are constantly updated with current ways of reacting in an emergency situation and do not ever have a gap in our staff being suitably qualified. All of our nursery staff are at least level 3 qualified. Our manager is qualified to degree level in Early Childhood Studies. One member of staff is currently studying for their Early Years Degree having already completed their Foundation Degree. One member of staff is level 4 and currently studying for level 6. One member of staff is studying for their Foundation Degree. We have monthly training at staff meetings in-house, plus Saturday training twice a year to explore bigger topics and external training for all staff as available/requested.


Ruth's background is having worked in a school for children with Special Educational Needs and as a Nursery Nurse within a local council run Nursery.(This is where Ruth and Sara met on their beginning of their journey of an Early Years career) Ruth has two grown up children. Her eldest daughter is a secondary school teacher and youngest daughter a beauty therapist. Ruth has one very special granddaughter born in 2014, who also attends nursery and a brand new baby girl. The excellent reputation of Abacus Nursery grew during early days whilst being run from a purpose built extension in Ruth's own home. Ruth expanded the nursery when she moved into the Cheddon Road premises. Ruth and Sara share the management role with Ruth's biggest role now being the business side of the nursery (wages, invoices, bills etc) much to Sara's delight that she doesn't have to deal with this and only manages the staff and children side of things (much nicer !!)


Having originally qualified as a Nursery Nurse, Sara worked in Social Services day nurseries and then as manager of nurseries in Somerset. After having her own children (now grown up - a son who is the Manager of an Estate Agents and a daughter who is a primary school teacher);she became an advisor for early years and then an Ofsted Inspector for Early Years, which she had done for 13 years. Sara has worked with children of all ages and has a secure knowledge of all aspects of childcare within early years. Sara is responsible for the delivery of the Early Years Foundation Stage and staff's continuous professional development. Sara ensures she engages with all staff on both floors each day in order to identify their training needs and support them well in their roles. This also means she has daily contact with the children and can best identify and help key staff to meet their key children's individual needs effectively.

Heidi is our cook and housekeeper . Up until very recently Heidi also worked with the children on some afternoons, teaching our toddlers and pre-school children how to cook and learn about healthy eating. This responsibility has been taken on by the nursery staff as Heidi has increased her hours as our housekeeper to further improve our health and hygiene procedures. Heidi also takes a lunch table every day with the toddler and pre-school children so she knows how well children eat and about portions, likes etc, which is valuable for her in following the whole food process through.

Heidi has now created her own nursery cookbook, which is available to purchase from the nursery as her meals are so healthy and nutritious to promote to parents as the children love her reciepes so much.

Heidi has a wonderful view point of the garden from her kitchen which means she is fully involved in observation of children and is a wealth of knowledge about children's individual needs, which she shares informally with key persons and at staff meetings.

Heidi achieved the hightest 5 star Environmental Health rating again in 2017 for the fifth time in a row.


Alan is Ruth's husband and a director of Abacus Nursery. He is retired from the Police force and now our handy man. The children love having Alan around (who is always supported by staff when gardening with the children) or carefully watched whilst he paints fences or mends toys. Children engage in wonderful conversations with him about what he is doing and replicate what they see in their play. Children love to have a 'mecanic area' with wheeled toys upside down pretending to mend them or clean them. A positive male role model is essential at Abacus Nursery and we have been lucky to have a male apprentice for the past year also which has been an asset to our staff team.


We use a variety of staff as relief cover at nursery to cover sickness/holidays. Elaine is an ex member of staff who returns as a regular face to provide consistent, relief staffing for either floor. She is an extremely gentle, kind lady with a wealth of experience. She comes in at short notice and provides the best, nurturing, care with beautiful communication with all ages. She makes everyone (children, parents, staff and students)feel valued. She is an asset to Abacus Nursery. At various times we trial other relief members of staff, who we keep you informed of through our notice boards. All staff have a Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) check carried out on them before working with the children.

Employee of the month

Each month at a staff meeting, management announce the 'employee of the month'. This is a great morale boost to the staff team and encourages each member of staff to continuously shine and be proud of their achievements. As a reward, the employee of the month has a certificate, which is displayed on the 'Wow board' so that children understand the importance of recognising and celebrating everyone's achievements not just their own. Staff also receive a gift card for the shop of their choice. We have an amazing team of staff at Abacus and ask parents to contribute to our 'above and beyond' board each month - which feeds into our overall choice of staff for the award. We all jot down 'above and beyond' moments for reading out at the staff meeting.The latest member of staff for recognition was... everyone in November for our 'Outstanding' Ofsted report !!!!!
